This group collects the animals that sit outside the familiar vertebrate and arthropod classes used elsewhere in the catalogue — crustaceans such as krill, crabs and mantis shrimp, along with other invertebrates that do not fit neatly into the categories above. It is a category of convenience rather than a natural grouping, and the animals in it are related to each other only distantly. What they tend to share is being overlooked. Several of them are among the most abundant and consequential animals on the planet: krill alone supports a substantial fraction of the life in the Southern Ocean, and the crustaceans as a whole occupy roles in the sea comparable to those insects occupy on land.
